The day aims to examine different audit aspects of how we employ and look after our people, including training and development; coping with epidemics; and employment issues.
The seminar is kindly being hosted at Speke, Liverpool by Natasha Miles of The Riverside Group (2 Estuary Boulevard, Speke, Liverpool, L24 8RF). The nearest stations are Runcorn and Liverpool South Park Way.
Member organisations may nominate up to three delegates, and places will be allocated in the order that applications are received. Additional delegates and non-members will be offered places, subject to availability, at a cost of £35 per person.

10.30 “Illegal Workers”, Julie Gregory and Nicola McCarthy, UK Border Agency
Julie Gregory and Nicola McCarthy are Immigration Officers from the UK Border Agency, Liverpool. Together they work in the Intelligence unit, with a remit to find illegal workers and Failed Asylum seekers. They have both previously worked as Immigration Officers at Liverpool Airport and within the Enforcement Office.
The presentation will include details on the new civil penalties legislation, documents the employer may come across and basic forgery advice.

11.45 “Business Continuity Planning in the Context of Pandemic Flu”, Lee Cartwright, Mazars and Pam Grice, The Community Housing Group
Whilst the eventual impact of the current swine flu pandemic is impossible to predict, we must all consider the potential implications for our organisations and take steps to manage the risks that swine flu presents us with. In this session, Lee Cartwright will outline some of the important internal audit principles around business continuity planning, and the particular risks that H5N1 poses for the sector. Pam Grice will share with us the practical steps which The Community Housing Group (TCHG) has taken in response to the swine flu threat, including scenario planning, and the actions that TCHG is now taking as a result.
Lee Cartwright is a Partner at Mazars and is the firm's Head of Social Housing for London and the South East. He has specialised in the social housing sector for over 15 years, providing internal and external audit services to housing associations and ALMOs. He presents regularly at NHF and HIAF annual conferences and events and is also a board member of Hounslow Homes.
Pam Grice is the Head of Risk and Project Management at The Community Housing Group, a Registered Social Landlord based in Worcestershire.
Qualified as a Chartered Accountant, she worked as a Financial Accountant in the commercial sector before joining Wyre Forest District Council in 1991 as Housing Accountant.
Pam was actively involved in the transfer of the Council’s housing stock in 2000, initially taking responsibility for the Finance Department and then since 2003 for setting up and developing the Risk Management functions for the organisation.

13.15 " Training and Development” – Richard Bell, Learning and Development Business Partner, Riverside Housing Group
Richard has extensive experience in delivering training and development packages within both private and public sectors, including Liverpool City Council and Merseyside Probation Service. Richard is a qualified member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.
This session will provide practical advice on the training and development process from how an organisation can identify and analyse training needs of staff, the evaluation of the training delivered and sources of funding for staff development and training during the current climate.

14.15 “New Employment Law” – Helen Cookson, Trowers and Hamlins LLP
Helen Cookson qualified as a solicitor in 1993 and has specialised in employment law throughout her career, advising employers in both the public and private sectors. She has extensive experience in advising on all aspects of employment law and is an experienced employment tribunal advocate and seminar speaker.
The session will cover the equality bill, employment law, disciplinary and grievance procedures and the ACAS Code.
